Christmas Dinner for Those in Need

Serving the less fortunate on Christmas Day

The Cathedral of Saint Patrick is well known throughout the city for our annual Christmas dinner, held on Christmas day from noon to 1:30 pm, that assists the less fortunate in our community. Last year, over 600 volunteers came together on Christmas Day and over 3,500 meals were served or delivered. There are many volunteer opportunities for individuals and families to assist with the dinner and to spread a little Christmas joy to those most in need. Below are a few frequently asked questions about the Christmas dinner and how you can help.

Q. How can I help?
The dinner always needs volunteers to help with food preparation, set-up & clean-up, serving and meal delivery. Click here to sign up as a volunteer.

Q. As a volunteer, can I pick where I want to work during the dinner?
Since there are a certain number of volunteers needed for each volunteer position, we aren’t able to promise those wishing to help with a certain time slot or volunteer shift. The Christmas dinner leadership team will do their best to accommodate your schedule as they understand that giving of your time on Christmas day is very valuable.

Q. Can I help out before the dinner on the 25th?
In addition to the dinner itself, volunteers are needed prior to the dinner, to assist with items such as setup & decorations.

Q. Will I be told how to perform the volunteer duties I’m assigned?
Yes! As Christmas approaches, the leadership team will contact all the volunteers with information outlining shifts and job duties. There will be “training sessions” prior to the dinner to iron out any confusion and to make sure everyone understands their duties on Christmas Day.

Q. Is there a minimum age for unsupervised teenagers to serve at the Dinner?
People of all ages are welcome to participate in the Christmas Dinner preparations. When you sign up, the total number of volunteers you list should include middle school aged children and up. For example, if two adults are registering with three children in middle or high school, then list five volunteers. If two adults are registering with three children under middle school age, list only two volunteers. We'll still find some way for the young ones to help out!
